what is the fonction of mucus in stomach?
Answers
Answer:
Gastric mucus is a glycoprotein that serves two purposes: the lubrication of food masses in order to facilitate movement within the stomach and the formation of a protective layer over the lining epithelium of the stomach cavity.
Function of Mucus in stomach
mucus is secreted by mucus cells present in stomach which protect the gastric ( stomach ) wall from the acidic environment of the stomach
the acidic environment in stomach is due to the secretion of HCl from oxyntic cells / parietal cells that activate the inactive enzymes of stomach.
The inactive enzymes secreted by chief cells / peptic cells are - pepsinogen and prorenin
which get activated in the presence of HCl into pepsin and renin respectively . These two enzymes breakdown Protein into simpler forms
