Maximum shear stress formula is given by

τ(max) = square root of { [ (σ(x) - σ(y)) /2 ] ^ 2 + τ(xy)^2 }

σ(x) is normal stress in direction  x

σ(y) is Normal stress in direction  y

τ(xy) is the shear stress (in direction y) that is in perpendicular direction to x axis

At a specific angle of Ф (max), maximum shear stress occurs.

Definition:

Shear stress is a type of stress that is exerted in a parallel direction to the surface.

Hope it helps. Thank You!
