What is atomic mass ?

Atomic mass is nothing but the atomic number of the element

The atomic number of an element is the number of protons or the number of electrons present in the atom.

In order to calculate the atomic mass we need to find the atomic number of an element .

For example : H has 1 atom .

So atomic mass in g is 1 g.

Formula for average atomic mass

= atomic number of the element expressed in grams . [ atom with no isotopes ]

Formula of average atomic mass

= [ ( isotope 1 mass )( abundance %) + ( isotope 2 mass ) ( abundance %) ] / 100

Calculate isotope 1 mass by using the previous formula only .

The isotope's abundance has to be known.

If the element does not have isotopes then you need to know the atomic number !

Best of luck .....

Hope it helps
