What is the formula for calculating specific charge (e/m ratio)? Also please ans this question : A negative meson is 204 times heavier than an electron and a proton is 1836 times heavier than an electron. What is the ratio of specific charges of negative meson and proton? [Ans: 9:1]

Explanation:

As given that proton has specific charge to be 9.6×107C kg−1.

Now as alpha particle is the Helium nucleus, so it must have +2 unit charge.

Specific charge of proton =mass of proton in particlespecific charge of proton

Alpha particle is doubly ionised He atom. It carries +2e charge (Twice the charge of proton and mass of alpha particle is (2 Neutrons + 2 Protons) is almost 4 times the mass of proton.

So, if Specific charge of Proton = mp+e

Then, Specific charge of Alpha particle = 4mp+2e= specific charge of proton × 1/2

So, Specific charge of alpha particle =29.6×107=4.8×107Ckg−1.
