No of tetrahedral voids in a ccp lattice Y is "twice" as that of the no of atoms of Y.
according to the question: atoms X fills 1/3 of the voids present in Y
and number of Voids present in Y =2Y

since X fills 1/3 of voids the equation can be made as
X=(1/3)×2Y
X=(2/3) Y

Hence the formula of the compound becomes:
X₃Y₂

NOTE:
For Tetrahedral compounds the number void will be Twice as that of number of atoms in Y

For Octahedral compounds the number void will be same as that of number of atoms in Y

Answer:

XY3

Explanation:

For N number of atoms,

There are N octahedral voids and 2N tetrahedral voids(But our question doesnt ask about tetrahedral so we wont need it).

Suppose there are n number of Y atoms

and X occupies 1/3rd of the octahedral voids = \frac{1}{3} x n

So,

X:Y = \frac{n}{3} : n = \frac{1}{3} : 1 = 1:3

Therefore,

XY3 is the correct answer.

Hope it helps!!!
