Bleaching powder is produced when chlorine gas passes through the slaked lime at 40° C temperature. Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 → Ca (OCl)Cl + H2O.

Here , the chemical formula of bleaching powder is Ca(OCl)Cl .

Bleaching powder reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide and water and produce hypochlorus acid (HClO) . Hypochlorus acid dissociates instantly and produces active oxygen . Active oxygen and HCl react and produce water and active chlorine. The active chlorine removes spots by oxidation.

2Ca(OCl)Cl + H2O + CO2 —> CaCO3+ CaCl2 + 2 HClO

2Ca(OCl)Cl + H2O + CO2 —> CaCO3+ CaCl2 + 2 HClOHClO → HCl+ 2[O]O

2Ca(OCl)Cl + H2O + CO2 —> CaCO3+ CaCl2 + 2 HClOHClO → HCl+ 2[O]O2HCl + [O] →H2O + 2Cl

Bleaching powder is widely used as antiseptic. Produced atomic oxygen and atomic chlorine oxidizes the protein of the germ and kills it .
