OTP stands for One Time Pâssword.

- OTP or one-time pâsswords are generated each  time the authentication process is done and the  user must be able to key in the right answer.

- The concept of paired pâsswords is implemented  where the user supplies one part and the system  generates and challenges the user about the  knowledge of the other part.

- OTP is different every time it is generated and  varies from nstance to nstance, user to user and  session to session.

Implementation of OTP

- OTP is deployed commercially with SecureID using hardware  calculators or with seed value being the current time.

- PIN or Personal Identification Number is made use of as the  first level of access check after which OTP is generated in case  of net banking.

- This type of two-factor authentication reduces the chances of breaches than authentication processes which make use of  single factor.

- OTP uses a cØde book where the already used OTPs are ruled  out or crossed out for further use. This cØde book should  remain protected.
