In human beings, vermiform appendix is a vestigeal organ, i.e., it doesn't have any function, but it is assumed that it performed the function of digestion of cellulose in our ancestors.

The function of the appendix is unknow. One theory is that the appendix acts on the storehouse for good bacteria, '' rebooting '' the digestive system after diarrhea illnesses. Other experts believe the appendix is just a useless remnent from our evolutionary past.
