Iodine is present in salts that we take in our food. This is an essential trace element required for the production of thyroid hormone inside thyroid gland. This hormone controls various body processes and basal metabolic rate (BMR) of the body. In absence of iodine thyroid gland swollen and this condition is clinically known as ‘goitre’. Other problems associated with iodine deficiency include muscle weakness, fatigue, low temperature of the body etc.
