A galvanometer works as an actuator, by producing a rotary deflection (of a "pointer"), in response to electric current flowing through a coil in a constant magnetic field. They were the first instruments used to detect and measure small amounts of electric currents. The electric current is the rate of charge flowing in a cross- section of the conducting element in a second and its measurement unit is—in SI—the ampere (symbol A). Instruments that measure voltages and currents are called voltmeters and ammeters, respectively.
