The functions of lysosome are: 1》 They destroy any foreign material which entre the cell such as bacteria and virus. 2》 They remove the worn out and poorly working cellular organelles by digesting them to make way for their new replacements. 3》 During breakdown of cell structure, when the cell gets damaged, lysosomes may burst and the enzymes eat up their own cells. Therefore, lysosomes are also known as suicide bags of a cell.

Inside a cell, numerous organelles function to remove wastes. One of the key organelles involved in digestionand waste removal is the lysosome. Lysosomes are organelles that contain digestive enzymes. They digest excess or worn out organelles, food particles, and engulfed viruses or bacteria.

They have a simple structure; they are spheres made up of a lipid bilayer that encloses fluid that contains a variety of hydrolytic enzymes. ... Lysosomes are formed by budding off of the Golgi apparatus, and the hydrolytic enzymes within them are formed in the endoplasmic reticulum
