Answer:

The alveoli are where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out. Oxygen breathed in from the air passes through the alveoli and into the blood and travels to the tissues throughout the body. There are two forms of respiration, internal and external respiration. External respiration refers to gas exchange across the respiratory membrane in the lungs. Gas exchange takes place between the alveoli and the blood in which there is diffusion of the oxygen from the alveoli to the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to the alveoli. Internal respiration refers to gas exchange between the capillaries and the cells of metabolising tissues.
