A modified leaf or scale, typically small, with a flower or flower cluster in its axil. Bracts are sometimes larger and more brightly coloured than the true flower, as in poinsettia.

the bracts are coloured leaf like structures which grow from the axil of the flower the are generally colourful to attract insects for pollination

the coloured bracts in Bougainville help to attract the insects but the actual flowers are very small in size.
