Cartilage is a strong but flexible tissue.

The C-shaped cartilages are placed on each other but are open at the area where the trachea is nearest to the oesophagus.

They prevent and protect the traechae from collapsing during absence of air.

It also helps the traechae to expand when a person breathes.

=> It helps trachea to expand when person is breathing

Additional Function: (not important for cbse board exams)

=> It allows the trachea to collapse slightly at its opening, so food can pass down the esophagus after swallowing
