- Apart from the presence of chloroplasts, the presence of a cell wall is another significant distinction between plant and animal cells.
- Plant cells have a cell wall that protects their plasma membrane from mechanical and osmotic stress.
- It also permits cells to create turgor pressure, or the pressure exerted by the contents of the cell against the cell wall.
- Plant cells have significant amounts of chemicals dissolved in their cytoplasm, which allows water to enter the cell under normal circumstances, causing the central vacuole to inflate and press against the cell wall.
- Turgor pressure prevents a plant from withering if it receives enough water.
- A plant may wilt in a drought, yet despite a decreasing, less turgid vacuole, its cell walls assist retain the structural integrity of its stems, leaves, and other components.
