Chromosomes are the structures which contain DNA. The DNA in turn contains genes. Chromosomes are the hereditary structures which are inherited from generation to generation. To you these chromosomes came from your father and mother(half from your mother and half from your father). Half the chromosomes which came from your father carried the characters of your father and half the chromosomes which came from your mother carried the characters of your mother. These chromosomes carry all necessary information to carry out different functions of the cell or insense it is the genes in the chromosomes which guide the cell in performing different functions like
1. Guiding the cell in cell division
2. Plays an important role in inheritance of characters from generation to generation
3. Guiding protein synthesis
4. Performing carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism
5. Self repairing
If chromosomes are absent, the cell can not perform different function as it doesn't know how to do them. So a chromosome has information for all the functions to be carried out by the cell.

Chromosomes carry genes. They are responsible for making the organisms what they are by helping a cell to grow, expand, and reproduce.
