Function of commutator: To keep the torque on a DC motor from reversing every time the coil moves through the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field, a split-ring device called a commutator is used to reverse the current at that point.

The functions of Commutator:

  • The commutator or a ‘slip ring’ is used in DC motor.
  • The DC motor is used to prevent the change in torque when the blade of the DC motor is right angle to the perpendicular plate of the motor.
  • When the blade is at right angle, then the commutator reverses they ‘Direction of the current’.
  • Hence as the direction of the current is reversed, the torque is changed in the direction.
  • As a result due to a dipole formation the blade moves completely in 360 degree.
