As the plant grows old, the outer protective layer that is the epidermis goes under certain changes. The epidermis of the young stem is replaced by a sprit of secondary meristem called cork cambium or phellogen.

Cork is light weight and does not catch fire easily, due to these properties it is used in making insulators, shock absorbers and sports goods.

They protect the plants from harmful microbes.

They prevent the loss of water by evaporation and transportation.
