The air reaches the lungs when we inhale. Diaphragm is a large muscular sheet that forms the floor of the chest cavity. Lungs are present in the chest cavity. The chest cavity is surrounded by ribs on the sides. During inhalation, the ribs move up and diaphragm moves down which increases the space in the chest cavity and the air enters the lungs. During exhalation, ribs move down and inwards and diaphragm moves upwards to its normal position which reduces the size of the chest cavity and the air is pushed out.
