Digestive Enzymes :

  • Digestive enzymes help with the breakdown of food so that the nutrients contained within the food can be absorbed.
  • Digestive enzymes work by breaking down large macromolecules such as protein, fat and carbohydrates into their smaller building blocks so that they can be absorbed by the body.
  • Digestive enzymes are released, or secreted, by the organs of the digestive system.

Examples of digestive enzymes are:

Amylase, produced in the mouth.

Pepsin, produced in the stomach.

Trypsin, produced in the pancreas.

Pancreatic lipase, produced in the pancreas.

Deoxyribonuclease and ribonuclease, produced in the pancreas.
