what is the function of epiglottis

Epiglottis is the cover on the opening of trachea or wind pipe..
It is a mass of tissue present as a slid on the glottis(opening of trachea) which doesnt allow food to enter into the wind pipe..

Epiglottis is the epithelial tissue consist of cartilage which act as lid during injection it over lap the wind pipe to prevent the entry of food particles.
Or
The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located behind the tongue, at the top of thelarynx, or voice box. The main function of the epiglottis is to seal off the windpipe during eating, so that food is not accidentally inhaled.
