First of all hope my friend is aware of what eppiglotis is and where its location is.Though ,l start answering by mentioning them since the function-my friend's question is directly connected to these.

WHAT IS EPPIGLOTIS?/LOCATION?/FUNCTION:::

Epiglotis is a flap present on the top/end of the larynx ,the voice box which is present in the throat.Hope u know that pharyx is the common passage of air and food.So there is probability for accidential inhalation of food into wind pipe/trachea from while eating.So this eppiglotis act as a switch while eating and prevent from entering of food into trachea
