What is the function of fuse ?Name the material used for making fuse.In household circuit where is fuse connected?
Answers
The function of a fuse is usually to prevent fire - that's the basic protection a fuse offers - between power supply and appliance there may be a few feet or metres of cable - if a short circuit occurs in the appliance, the cable could easily become overheated (due to excess current) and burn or rupture its insulation.
Silver plated copper is also commonly used. As a rule, fuse elements of time delay fuses contain low melting point materials, e.g. tin (Sn) or zinc (Zn) and alloys thereof. Formerly used alloys containing lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) have widely been eliminated.
Fuse can be connected in series in anywhere in the circuit but in household it is connected before the main meter to protect the household circuit from higher current which may enter from the mains.
The fuse is used to protect the circuits from damaging due to short circuiting and overloading by melting and breaking the circuit if the current exceeds the safe value. It is made up of a tin plated copper wire having low melting point. A fuse is connected in series in the electric cicuits.
