Answer:  The primary function of gastric juice is the digestion of proteins into smaller peptides with the help of enzyme Pepsin.

Gastric juice is secreted by the gastric glands which are present in the lining of the stomach.

Components of gastric juice are-

  • Hydrochloric acid- helps in maintaining optimum pH ( 1.5-2) for Pepsin activity.
  • Pepsin- Active form of the protein-digesting enzyme. Pepsinogen is the inactive form of this enzyme which gets converted to Pepsin with the help of HCl ( hydrochloric acid)
  • Mucus- Protects the lining of the stomach from the action of HCl.
  • Intrinsic factor- It is a glycoprotein which helps in the absorption of Vitamin B12.
  • Water- Helps in proper mixing of food.
