HCL activate the enzyme production that is the pepsin which helps in digestion by breaking down the protein molecules into peptides. the mucus prevents the stomach walls from being damaged by the hcl.

HCL make the food acidic so that that gastric juice and different enyme can act in it. mucus protect the stomach from effect of HCL
