high resistance is connected in series with the Galvanometer to avoid large current through the Galvanometer .large current through Galvanometer damage its. high resistance does not affect the balance point in any manner

When a high resistance named series resistance is connected in series with the galvanometer the maximum current passes through the galvanometer resistance.

This combination is called voltmeter

This has an effect on the balance point because it changes the potential drop across the wire.
