The hilum (plural hila) is the part of an organ where the ‘tubes and lines’ come in and go out of the organ. This is the arteries, the veins, nerves (sometimes) lymphatic vessels (sometimes) and other specialty tubes of that particular organ. In the case of the kidney that would be the ureter that connects the kidney to the bladder.

The renal hilus is an indentation near to the centre of the concave area of the kidney. This is the area of the kidney through which the ureter leaves the kidney and the other structures including blood vessels (illustrated), lymphatic vessels, and nerves enter/leave the kidney.
