When a foreign body enters the cell or an organelle stops functioning, lysosomes surround the body at form a chain, and release hydrolytic enzymes which break down the body. Thus, they help to keep the cell clean and are known as scavengers of the cell.

When there is a disturbance in cell metabolism, or if the cell membrane breaks down, lysosomes may burst. This releases the hydrolytic enzymes into the cytoplasm and the entire cell gets destroyed by the enzymes. Hence lysosomes are also called suicide bags of the cell.
