The nucleus can be thought of as the brain of the cell, as it controls all cellular functions. The nucleus contains genetic material, which is passed on from parent to offspring. The genetic material is stored as genes on DNA. Genes are pieces of DNA which encode for proteins and characteristics such as eye colour. Thus by controlling protein synthesis, the nucleus is able to control the cell.
