what is the function of pituitary gland?
Answers
The major functions of Pituitary Gland are as follows :
- Anterior Pituitary is responsible for stimulation or inhibitions of other glands by secretion of hormones in the blood stream
- Posterior Pituitary is responsible for Secretion of 2 hormones namely Vasopressin and Oxytocin.
Discussion of the functions in details :
1. Pituitary secretes Growth Hormone (GH) responsible for growth of bones , visceras ,etc.
2. Pituitary secretes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone responsible for production of T3 and T4 in the thyroid gland.
3. Pituitary secretes Prolactin responsible for milk production.
4. Pituitary secetes Adreno-Cortico Trophic Hormone (ACTH) , responsible for production of Adrenal cortical hormones like Mineralocorticoid or Glucocorticoid.
5. Production of LH and FSH is useful in maturation of gonads , spermatozoa and ovum.
6. Oxytocin helps in Milk ejection and birth of child through the vaginal canal.
7. Vasopressin is responsible for prevention of diuresis ( excessive urination).
