Answer:

The placenta serves as an interface between the mother and the developing fetus and has three main jobs: Attach the fetus to the uterine wall. Provide nutrients to the fetus. Allow the fetus to transfer waste products to the mother's blood.

FUNCTIONS OF PLACENTA

Placenta is a temporary, but vital organ formed around the developing fetus within the uterus during pregnancy.

This organ performs the following important functions.

  • Connects the fetus to the uterine wall via umbilical cord.
  • Transports nutrients and oxygen from the maternal blood to the fetus.
  • Transports waste materials (urea, uric acid, etc.) and CO₂ from the fetus to maternal blood.
  • Provides passive immunity to the developing fetus as the IgG antibodies can pass through the placental barrier.
  • Acts as a blood reservoir for the fetus.
  • Produces hormones very critical for the maintenance of healthy pregnancy. They are human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), progesterone, estrogen, placental lactogen, placental growth hormone. (Note: HCG is the first hormone produced and is the indicator of pregnancy.)
