what is the function of prolactin hormone
Answers
HOLLA DEAR!!!
Functions · It stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk (lactation): increased serum concentrations of prolactin during pregnancy cause enlargement of the mammary glands and prepare for milk production, which normally starts when levels of progesterone fall by the end of pregnancy and a suckling stimulus is present.

prolactin is a hormone predominantly present in mammals (females). It is also known by other names such as luteotropic hormone or luteotropin. Prolactin was first discovered in non human animals in 1930 by Oscar Riddle and its presence was confirmed in humans in 1970 by Henry Friesen. The hormone plays an important role in enabling mammals to produce milk. The hormone is secreted from the pituitary gland. The release of prolactin is controlled by following conditions:
●Eating
●Mating
●Estrogen treatment
●Ovulation and nursing.
The hormone plays an essential role in a wide variety of cellular process varying from metabolism, regulation of the immune system and pancreatic development. Some common functions of prolactin hormone are as follows:
Stimulation of the mammary glands to produce milk (lactation)
Gratification after sexual acts
Decrease in the levels of sex hormones ( estrogen/ testosterone)
Stimulation in proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells.
