★Red blood cells (RBCs), also known as erythrocytes, have two main functions:

  • To pick up oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to tissues elsewhere.

  • To pick up carbon dioxide from other tissues and unload it in the lungs

Transportation

Red blood cells (Erythrocytes) contain hemoglobin , which has a buffering effect. Heme is very active, it can not only combine with oxygen, but also combined with carbon dioxide. Therefore, its main job is to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. The function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen, electrolytes , glucose and amino acids, which are necessary for human metabolism, as well as transport carbon dioxide. In addition, it also plays a role in buffering the acid-base balance . Both functions are achieved through hemoglobin in red blood cells. If the red blood cells rupture, hemoglobin is released and dissolved in the plasma , that is, the above function is lost.

Red blood cells transport oxygen through hemoglobin, and 90% of red blood cells are composed of hemoglobin.

  • Hemoglobin is a red blood cell-associated compound, myoglobin , which stores oxygen in muscle cells .

Immunity

  • Enhances phagocytosis

Nelson conducted experiments in vitro with pneumococcus and Treponema pallidum, and found that pneumococcus or Treponema pallidum sensitized by the corresponding antibody can only be quickly engulfed by 80% to 95% of the mixture containing complement, red blood cells and white blood cells.

In 1956, Nelson injected the antibody-conditioned pneumococcus into monkeys, and the results obtained were the same as in vitro experiments.

100% of pneumococcus adhered to red blood cells. Adhered complexes are more likely to be swallowed than free complexes suspended in plasma. Some viruses can also adhere to red blood cells in the body, which is swallowed and destroyed. Immune adhesion can enhance phagocytosis 4 to 5 times. Red blood cells can also prevent cancer cells from spreading in the circulation, because cancer cells encounter red blood cells 500 to 1,000 times more often than white blood cells in peripheral blood. When the cell surface bound antibody with complement, C3b receptor may be by the surface of red blood cells, red blood cells adhere to the cancer cells, it is easy to phagocytic cells capture and phagocytosis, thereby preventing the transfer and diffusion of cancer cells.

In addition, erythrocytes also have the function of phagocytic cells, with peroxidase on the surface of their cell membranes, which is a typical lysosomal enzyme, which can play a macrophage-like killing effect.

Red blood cells are known to have the following immune functions:

  • Identify and carry antigens.
  • Clear the immune complexes in circulation.
  • Enhance T cell dependence response.
  • Effector cell-like effect.
  • Promote phagocytosis. The physiological basis of these immune functions is the immune adhesion of red blood cells .
