A rheostat is a variable resistor. By changing the resistance you can control the current flowing through it. This can then be used to control downstream devices like transistors or lamps. Dimmer switches on incandescent lights are rheostats.

A rheostat is a variable resistance device whose value can be set smoothly by hand from 0 to 100%. Once set, it remains in that value within specified tolerance limits due to spring loaded contacts. So if you buy a 100 ohm rheostat then you can virtually get any value from 0 to 100 ohms by moving its slider arm on coils.

Mostly rheostats are large in size depending upon the current they carry and rsultant heat they radiate out. So they are made hollow to facilitate air cooling.

It is used commonly as a load resistor to test power supply load regulation.
