This layer of epidermis is constituted by a single row of columnar or cuboidal cells of epithelium. Half of all these epithelial cells continuously undergo division and replace the rest of them epidermis that is eroding. The rest of the cells differentiate and progress to the next epidermal layer to begin the process of maturation.
