What is the function of the air spaces in the spongy mesophyll?

As stated before, the plant needs carbon dioxide to proceed withphotosynthesis. By having the spongy mesophyll cells there to keep considerable gaps between them, we see this exchange of gases about theleaf. These air spaces also allow the air from outside the leaf to move in via the stoma.
