According to NCERT , this the quasi-fluid nature of lipid enables lateral movement of protein within the overall bilayer . This ability to move within the membrane is measured as its fluidity .
The fluid nature of the cell membrane is also important for the point of view of functions like cell growth , formation of intercellular junctions, secretion, endocytosis , cell division etc.

The fluid mosaic model describes the structure of the plasma membrane as a mosaic of components —including phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates—that gives themembrane a fluid character. ... The mitochondrial inner membranecontains 76% protein and 24% lipid, that are constantly moving. This movement helps the cell membrane maintain its role as a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell environments.
