Tongue - It is composed of skeletal muscle and externally lined by mucus membrane.

•The anterior end of the tongue is FREE while the posterior end is attached to HYOID BONE in the skull.

•The under surface of the tongue is attached to the floor of the ORAL CAVITY by a thin membrane called FRENULUM.

FUNCTIONS -

Tongue is used for chewing and mastication of food with the help of gums and teeth present in the mouth.

♦ Tongue is also vital for speech.

(People without tongue can't speak !)

♦ Helps in sensing taste as it has taste buds - Bitter, sour, sweet and salt.

♦The tongue has many nerves that help detect and transmit taste signals to the brain.
