what is the funtion of an earth wire ? why it is necessary to earth metallic appliance

The earth wire creates a safe route for the current to flow through if the live wire touches the metal casing. Earthing of electronic appliances is necessary as it allows the extra current that can harm the device or us to be sent under the earth where it gets nutralized.
