Answer:

Christie's department of Indian Art is known worldwide for their sourcing of art from South Asia. And I should clarify that the use of the term South Asia includes by definition, the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. Christie's are also known for selling the first work by an Indian artist for over $1 million in 2005 — ’s Mahishasura - and for achieving nine of the top ten prices in the category to date. Christie's runs three auctions a year in Indian Art, two in New York, one in London.

So, this first statement is in order to show that the art world is developing a keen awareness of Contemporary Indian Art that is seeing a revival of Indian Art, and the perceived value of such work is clearly on the rise. Sales of Indian Art at auction are on the rise. Two prominent Indian Auction Houses are Saffron Art and Pundole Art Gallery. At the Indian Art Fair this year, response was mixed and it seems it is still defining itself.

I don't wish to make presumptions about what people do or do not know about Indian Contemporary Art, but for many people we have known the iconic spiritual images and statuary that is often seen in museums. If one looks up South Asian Art at for example the Metropolitan Museum of Art - in the galleries or on their site, what you'll find is a great deal of art from antiquity, mostly sculptures. What in fact you'll find if you look farther is a tremendous variety of painting styles, 3-d and installation works that parallel and in many cases surpass what's in the mainstream awareness of art. It's not just the statues of the Goddess Shiva or Ganesha, it's a whole brilliant world of visionary contemporary art.

Some of the current and rising generation of Indian Contemporary Artists:

Subodh Gupta

Vasudeo Kaitonde

Bharti Kher

Jitish Kallat

Rameshwar Broota

Reena Saina Kallat

Shilpa Gupta
