Given:

The numbers 139, 184 and 424 when divided by the greatest number leaves a remainder 4 in each case

To find:

The greatest number that will divide 139 184 and 424 leaving the reminder 4 in each case

Solution:

(i) Since the remainder 4 is being left out in each of the cases, therefore the number which exactly divides will be given as,

139 - 4 = 135

184 - 4 = 180

424 - 4 = 420

(ii) Now, we will find the H.C.F. of 135, 180 & 420

135 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 5

180 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5

420 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 × 7

H.C.F. of 135, 180 & 420 = 3 × 5 = 15

Thus, the greatest number that will divide 139 184 and 424 leaving the remainder 4 in each case is 15.
