What is HCF?

  • Basically, the full form of HCF is "highest common factor".
  • As the name suggests, it means the greatest number which can divide the given numbers.

Ex: The HCF of 4 & 6 is,

      24 = 2*2*3*2

      36 = 2*2*3*3

The HCF of 24 & 36 = 2*2*3 = 12

There are many ways to find HCF of numbers,

  • HCF by Prime factorization
  • HCF by Division method

Given 3 numbers 22, 44, 88

  • Let us solve them by the prime factorization method.

       22 = 2*11 = 1*2*11

       44 = 2*22 = 2*11*2 = 1*2*2*11

       88 = 2*44 = 1*2*2*2*11

Clearly, the highest common multiple here is 1*2*11.

∴ HCF of 22, 44 and 88 = 2*11 = 22

  • Let us solve them by the division method.

First we find the HCF of two numbers, that is 22 and 44, by dividing them,

              22 ) 44 ( 2

                      44

                       0

When the remainder is 0, we stop and the number in the divisor place is the HCF,

That is, 22 is the HCF of 44 and 88.

Now we find HCF between 22 and the remaining number, that is 88, using the division method.

              22 ) 88 (4

                      88

                       0

Clearly, the remainder is 0 and the number in the divisor position is 22.

∴ HCF of 22, 44 and 88 = 22
