What is the heat input needed to raise the temperature of 2 moles of helium gas from 0^@C to 100^@C (a) at constant volume, (b) at constant pressure? (c) what is the work done by the gas in part (b)? Give your answer in terms of R.

(a) Δu = n*cv Δt = 2* (3r/2 ) * Δt

[Δt = 100]

= 300r

constant volume work done is zero thus according to first law of thermodynamics

Δu = q-w => Δu = q

Δu = 300r

(b) q = n*cp Δt = 2* (5r/2 ) * Δt

[Δt = 100]

= 500r

(c) q = 500r

Δu = 300r

according to first law of thermodynamics

Δu = q-w

300r = 500r - w

w = 200r
