About Jaiswals

Origin of the Jaiswals Community

Jaiswal community name refers to residents of a place called Jayas or Jais in Rai Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. The variant spelling is Jayaswal and they are mainly located in Agra/Mathura region. Jaiswal is also a surname used by several Indian communities, in particular Jains, Kalwars and Rajputs.

This particular community was famous through out North India for its mastery over their traditional trade since remote past.

Jaiswal (Kalwar Caste)

The Kalwar, Kalal or Kalar are an Indian caste historically found in Rajasthan, Punjab and other parts of North and Central India. The caste is traditionally associated with the distillation of liquor, but around the start of the 20th century, assorted Kalwar caste organizations sought to leave that trade and redefine their community.

Jaiswal Brahmin

Brahmin Jaiswals belongs to Pancha-Gauda division and are branch of Kanyakubja Brahmins. Jaiswal Brahmins are mainly Chandravanshis or Gadhiwals. Some Jaiswals are also believed to be Nagar Brahmins. Jaiswals have historical similarity with Nagar Brahmins and Sakaldwipiya or Shakadvipi Brahmins.

According to one school of thought, it is also believed that Jaiswal Brahmins have roots in Middle East. Some Jaiswals are Chaurasi Brahmins from Nepal or North India, they are also termed as Shiv Brahmins. There is a strong link between Chaurasi Brahmins of north India and Nagar Brahmins. Nagvel or Nagar vel (beetle nut plant) is also an interesting connecting link. Some Jaiswals are Brahmin Swarnkars. This is probably due to the profession they acquired. Jaiswal Brahmins are also found amongst Utkal and Burmese Brahmins.

Jaiswal Rajput

Though being Brahmins Chandravanshi Jaiswals were efficient rulers and gallant warriors. They ruled various geographical domains spanning from Iran to Far East at various historical time segments hence some clans were also classified as Jaiswal Rajputs in more recent history Warrior Brahmins like Bhumihars or mohyals of Punjab. They were good rulers and gallant warriors. They believed in truly secular values and were great patrons of Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism and Hinduism. After invasions by Mughal or Arabic and Islamic hardliners in west and Mongol or Buddhist hardliners in east and far east they were compelled to fallback position in Indian subcontinent.

Name Prefix or Middle name -Gupta and -Varma or -Varman or -Barman were used by Brahmin Dynasty Kings in Eastern Parts of Indian Subcontinent and Far Eastern countries and after the fall of their empires to mongoloids or Buddhist and Islamic hardliners, their descendants eventually used them as Surnames e.g. King Sri Gupta ruled parts of North and North-East India, East Pakistan, parts of western India etc., King Rudravarma of Champa(Vietnam), King Jayavarma I of Kambuja(Kampuchea or Cambodia), Kings of other Far Eastern lands and regions.

Jaiswal Jain

Jaiswal Jains are one of the Jain communities of northern India. They are mainly located in the Gwalior/Agra region. The term Jaiswal indicated residents of a place named Jayas or Jais. Some authors have identified Jais with Jais in Raebareli district. A legend identifies it as Jaisalmer. However there are documented mentions of Jaiswal Jains prior to the settlement of Jaisalmer. The famous Dubkund Jain inscription of 1088 AD is the earliest mention of the Jayas town. The Apabhramsa Jain poet Lakshmana composed the Jinadatta Charitra in sam. 1275 and Anuvaya Rayana Payiiva in sam. 1313, both at Tihuangiri near Bayana. Thus the place Jayas must have been in the vicinity of Gwalior region.

Jamindars

Jaiswal Zamindars or Thakurs performed (mehsuli) revenue operations. Thakur is an Indian feudal title in several Indian languages, literally meaning "lord". A Thikana is the state or (more often) estate of a Thakur. A Thakurani is the wife of a Thakur. The big Jamindars of old times used Thakur as their title or surname. Most of the Kanyakubjas were landlords during the colonial rule in Awadh, Kannauj region and Bhojpuri region of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh.

Some deshastha(maharashtra dravid) jaiswal Brahmin surnames are also known viz Mahajan, Kale, Prasad, Chaudhari, Dahale, etc. Jaiswals are believed to be good administrators historically and handled beaurocracy responsibilities for various states. Nizam of Hyderabad specially invited Jaiswals from North India to settle in his sate and take care of beaurocratic as well as diplomatic tasks.
