Born in Karnal on July Chawla was youngest of four children.
Kalpana means "idea" or "imagination."
Chawla got degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College before moving to US and becoming naturalized citizen in 1980s.
She earned doctorate in aerospace engineering from University of Colorado in 1988 having previously obtained her masters from University of Texas.
