Hyder Ali became the ruler of Mysore in 1761. He started his career as an ordinary solider in the Mysore Army. He won many battles against the Marathas, the Nizam of Hyderabad and was able to rout his adversaries in two consecutive Anglo-Mysore wars. He was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan in 1782. Tipu ruled Mysore for 17 years. He was an efficient ruler and brave General. Tipu Sultan is known as the 'Tiger of Mysore'. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of French Revolution. He had to fight against the combined power of Nizam of Hyderabad, The Marathas and The English. He died in 1799, while he was defending his capital Seringapatam in the Final Anglo-Mysore War
