A homologous series is a series of carbon compounds that have different numbers of carbon atoms but contain the same functional group. For example, methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. are all part of the alkanes homologous series.

homologous series is a series of organic compounds where the successive members follow a regular pattern. the successive members differ by a CH2 group.

e.g. -

alkane group-

CH4 - methane

C2H6 - ethane

C3H8 - propane

C4H10 - butane

we can see that the members differ by a CH2 group.
