 vertical or latitudinal divisions:

1)Shiwaliks- lowest himalaya

2)Himachal- lower himalaya

3)Himadri- higher himalaya

horizontal or longitudinal divisions:

1)Punjab or Kashmir himalaya- Indus to Sutlej george

2)Kumaun himalaya- Sutlej to Kali george

3)Nepal himalaya- Kali to Teesta george

4)Assam himalaya- Teeesta to Dihang george

The Himalayas are the highest mountain range and are located in Asia, stretched along the northern border of India. The horizontal and vertical division of Himalayas are as follows.

Horizontal Division of Himalayas

From west to east, the Himalayas are divided as,

  • The Kashmir /Punjab/ Himachal Himalayas - This division is from Indus river to Sutlej.
  • The Kumaun Himalayas - This division of Himalayas is from, Sutlej and Kali river.
  • The Central/ Nepal Himalayas - This division is starts from Kali river to the Teesta river.
  • The Assam/ Eastern Himalayas - This division is from Teesta river and to Brahmaputra river.

Vertical Division of Himalayas

  • Shiwalik Himalayan range - These are outer Himalayas and is from Potwar Plateau to the Brahmaputra valley.
  • Himachal range - This range is also called as lower Himalayas, starts after Shiwalik range.
  • Himadri range - This division is also called as inner Himalayan range.
