Cytokinins delay leaves of deciduous trees senescing (ageing) by enforcing the leaves act as a sink for phloem transport, so leaf is guaranteed a good supply of nutrients. If cytokinin production drops, the supply of nutrients dwindles and senescence begins, followed by abscission
