Answer:

The immediate cause of the Indian Revolt of 1857 was a seemingly minor change in the weapons used by the British East India Company's troops. The East India Company upgraded to the new Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle, which used greased paper cartridges.

Use of greased cartridges in the new Enfield Rifle

The greased cartridges were introduced in the Enfield Rifles.

The Indian sepoys had to bite of the greased cartridges inorder to reload. The grease contained animal fat that was a taboo for the Hindu and Muslim sepoys.

This angered the sepoys to turn up against the British.
